How to Avoid Toxic Mulch

Mulch normally is beneficial to plants. However, there is a condition called toxic mulch that harms plants and can cause plant death. In this article, we’ll talk about how ordinary mulch becomes toxic mulch, how to recognize toxic mulch, how to prevent it, and what to do when you suspect toxic mulch in your garden.

How Toxic Mulch Forms

Toxicity happens when there is not enough air for the microbes in your mulch. This happens when mulch is kept improperly, like when they’re stored too compactly. Microbes are naturally present in mulch, which causes mulch to decompose slowly. In the absence of air, the microbes produce toxic substances like methanol, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide gas and more, which can harm the plants.

It’s usually the grass and the low-growing bushes that easily get affected by toxic mulch. The damage can vary. It may cause the plant to lose its leaves and leaf burn. In its severe state, it can cause plant death.

How to Recognize Toxic Mulch

One of the telltale signs of toxic mulch is the sour smell that this type of mulch produces. Normal mulch smells earthy and woody. Toxic soil produces a sour smell, much like vinegar or spoiled food. Another way to test it is by checking the pH level of your mulch. Toxic mulch is acidic, registering pH levels of 1.8 to 3.6. Normal mulch is pH neutral (6.0 to 7.2).

How to Prevent Toxic Mulch

The key to preventing toxic mulch is making sure that the microbes in your mulch receive a good amount of air for their activities. Here are a few things you can do to prevent mulch toxicity:

  • Do not pile your mulch too high or too compactly. Anything over 4 feet should be avoided.
  • Use dry materials as raw materials for creating your mulch. Wet and soggy organic materials tend to form mulch that mats together which can create suitable conditions for toxicity.
  • “Turn” your mulch regularly. Turning allows air to reach all areas of your mulch and prevents anaerobic (lack of air) conditions.

What to Do if You Suspect Toxic Mulch

If you think you have toxic mulch, the first thing that you need to do is to remove the mulch from your plants. When they are safely packed away, proceed to turn the mulch several times a day for about three days. This will allow the toxicity to dissipate from your mulch. Afterward, you can put them back in your garden.

Plants, unless they have been exposed to toxic mulch over a long period of time, usually bounce back from the effects of toxic mulch. Vigilance is important. At the first signs of toxic mulch, you need to aggressively resolve the situation to achieve the best results and avoid fatal damage to your plants.
